![]() Next turn the adjustment nut, checking the brake pedal free play as you do so. You'll need to back the jam nut off far enough so that you can turn the adjustment nut without interference. Hold the adjustment nut with one wrench while you loosen the jam nut with the other. You will notice that the rod has a 15mm jam nut and a 15mmm adjustment nut. To adjust the brake rod end play you'll need two 15mm wrenches. Whether the end play is too big or too small, you WILL have to adjust it. In cases like this the master cylinder is always being pushed a little bit, which leads to poor braking performance. Though a tight brake rod is what this thread is all about it is to be noted that you can also "over tighten" the rod, in other words if there is NO free play between the rod end of the brake rod and the master cylinder. The pedal feels like it's from another planet though (like most cars here) and it is surprising how many people get used to this feel after coming to VW's from more modern cars as a "sacrifice" when they should not feel like this in the first place. ![]() When the rod is out of adjustment the brakes will still work which partially explains why most people don't pay attention to this item. Please note that you do not confuse the brake rod end play with low brakes (mainly due to air in the system or the actual drums being out of adjustment) what you are looking for is the distance between the rod and the master cylinder. The specification is 3mm, but I've seen cars with MUCH more than that. ![]() ![]() Simply press the pedal with your hand and note how far you can push it down before you feel the end of the rod hit the piston in the master cylinder. It's easy to check to see if your brake pedal rod needs to be adjusted. time to set you all free of one more fear. Main reason for this is that most of us just listen blindly to our mechanics as we don't know too much about old technology. Judging by most of the beetles I've seen till now there is always one very major thing people tend to forget to do after working on their master cylinder and that is to adjust the brake pedal actuator rod. Because most beetles are now more than 30 years old, most of them have had to have the master cylinder worked on or replaced at least once in their life. ![]()
